8 Most Important Oil Rig Tools

Feb. 14, 2023

Oil drilling process covers many kinds of tools, each vital in the extraction process. However, some of the equipment exert more important function in the oil drilling project. They help reduce oil drilling costs, accidents, and environmental impacts.

1.Derrick

A derrick is a lifting device composed at minimum of one guyed mast, as in a gin pole, which may be articulated over a load by adjusting its guys. Most derricks have at least two components, either a guyed mast or self-supporting tower, and a boom hinged at its base to provide articulation, as in a stiffleg derrick. The most basic type of derrick is controlled by three or four lines connected to the top of the mast, which allow it both to move laterally and cant up and down. To lift a load, a separate line runs up and over the mast with a hook on its free end, as with a crane.

2.Crown block

A crown block is the stationary section of a block and tackle that contains a set of pulleys or sheaves through which the drill line (wire rope) is threaded or reeved and is opposite and above the traveling block.

The combination of the traveling block, crown block and wire rope drill line gives the ability to lift weights in the hundreds of thousands of pounds. When running heavy casing strings hook loads occasionally exceed one million pounds.

3. Drawworks

A drawworks is the primary hoisting machinery component of a rotary drilling rig. Its main function is to provide a means of raising and lowering the traveling block. The wire-rope drill line winds on the drawworks drum and over the crown block to the traveling block, allowing the drill string to be moved up and down as the drum turns.

4.Shale shakers

Shale shakers are components of drilling equipment used in many industries, such as coal cleaning, mining, oil and gas drilling. They are the first phase of a solids control system on a drilling rig, and are used to remove large solids (cuttings) from the drilling fluid ("mud").

5.Blowout preventer (BOP)

A blowout preventer (BOP) (pronounced B-O-P, not "bop") is a specialized valve or similar mechanical device, used to seal, control and monitor oil and gas wells to prevent blowouts, the uncontrolled release of crude oil or natural gas from a well. They are usually installed in stacks of other valves.

6. Sand Pumps

Sand pumps help to move deposits away from an oil drilling site. They are placed in oil and other fluid tanks that contain sand. These pumps have grooved disks that rotate around the tanks’ central axis so that any solid particles that touch them get removed.

7.Stabbing Guides

Drilling pipes can be misaligned during drilling, resulting in damage and downtime. The good news is that stabbing guides help align pins with boxing threads to ensure accurate and damage-free connections. They also protect pipes against impacts and corrosion.

8. Mud Cleaners

Mud cleaners help to keep the drilling fluids (mud) clean to ensure a smooth operation of the drill. Thick mud can stop the drill from working efficiently, causing downtime. So, mud cleaners have meshes with tiny holes to prevent solids from mixing with mud.
